Currently, Dien Bien has 19 ethnic groups living together (Mong (Mông), Tai (Thái), Kinh, Kho Mu (Khơ Mú), Dao, Khang (Kháng), Lao (Lào), Ha Nhi (Hà Nhì), Hoa, Xinh Mun, Tay (Tày), Muong (Mường), Cong (Cống), Nung (Nùng), Tho (Thổ), Phu La (Phù La), Si La, San Chay (Sán Chảy) and others).

In which, the Tai people accounts for the majority of the population in Dien Bien with 38.4%. The relative proportions of the remaining ethnic groups are the Mong (Mông) (34.8%;), the Kinh (20%) and other ethnic groups (6.8%).

Each ethnic group has its own characteristics of language, customs, culture... forming a colorful picture for Dien Bien culture.
