Muong Ang – the major industrial crop development area of Dien Bien Province

Muong Ang has a total natural area of 44,341.44 ha, with 10 affiliated administrative divisions including 9 communes and 1 town; the average population is 47,000 people, including 4 main ethnic groups of Thai (accounting for 70.5%), Mong (13.9%), Kinh (11.6%), Kho Mu (3.3%), the rest are other ethnic groups. Located about 40 km from Dien Bien Phu City to the West, Muong Ang District is endowed with soil, climate by the nature, in appropriate with the development of industrial crops, especially coffee.

Currently, Muong Ang is planned and identified as the largest coffee growing area in Dien Bien Province. In 2020, the total area of coffee is 2,939 hectares, the output is estimated at 4,500 tons. The whole district has 04 roasted and grinded coffee processing establishments with modern machinery and a number of small establishments manually roasting and grinding coffee. The production output is estimated at 30 tons of roasted and grinded coffee products, with the estimated product value of 7 billion dong, creating regular jobs for about 30 employees, step by step creating Muong Ang roasted and grinded coffee brand name. The coffee has been identified as an advantageous tree of the district, helping to create jobs, increase income, step by step improve life, eradicate hunger and reduce poverty for the local people within the territory.

In addition to coffee development, Muong Ang District is in the socio-economic, national defense and security development strategies of Dien Bien, being the key area for development of perennial industrial crops, fruit trees and development of livestock and poultry husbandry. Currently, Muong Ang has been converting 323 hectares of swidden land, mixed garden land and other lands for growing annual crops to lands for fruit trees with high economic value (orage, pomelo, mango, passion fruit).

Currently, the district focuses on attracting a number of enterprises to invest in growing fruit trees. Specifically: Project of growing fruit trees of Quang Ha Enterprise in Bung Lao Commune; Project of combination of afforestation, growing fruit trees and growing other economic trees of Bui Gia Phat Construction Co., Ltd has been currently being in the process of land accumulation survey for building the project. In addition, the animal husbandry in the district has been gradually developing in the direction of commodity, the husbandry scale has been being from small and scattered to concentrated farm husbandry, with the epidemic safety control. The total flock of livestock and poultry in 2020 is estimated at 279,361, increasing by 15,892 in comparison with 2017.

In the period of 2021 – 2025, Muong Ang will focus on promoting the restructuring of the agricultural sector, implementing the Master Plan on socio – economic development in ethnic minorityand mountainous areas in the period of 2021 – 2030, striving for maintenance of the effective coffee area of 2,000 ha concentrated in the communes of Ang Nua, Ang Cang, Ang To, gradually reducing the old, stunted and ineffective coffee area, converting to the other crop area of 939 hectares, developing the fruit tree area of 1,000 hectares (of which 600 hectares will be newly planted). In terms of husbandry, strive to increase the total annual herd of livestock by 3.5%/year, the total annual flock of poultry by 8%/year on average, focus on strongly developing the main breeds with development conditions and ability, in appropriate with the husbandry practice of people such as: beef, pig, poultry, organize husbandry production in a chain linking products from production to market.
