Dien Bien is a mountainous border province in the Northwest region of Vietnam and nearly 500 km from Hanoi. It borders Son La Province to the East and Northeast, Lai Chau Province to the North, Yunnan Province (the People's Republic of China) to the Northwest, and Phongsaly Province and Luang Prabang Province (Lao People's Democratic Republic) to the West and Southwest. It is also the only province that shares the border line with two countries of Laos and China with a total length of 455,573 km, including 414.712 km with Laos and 40.86 km with China. There are roadways from Dien Bien to Northern Laos and Yunnan Province of China. On the border lines, there are multiple border gates of different types, including Tay Trang - Pang Hoc international border Gate; Huoi Puoc - Na Son national border Gate, Si Pa Phin - Huoi La border Gate, A Pa Chai - Long Fu local Checkpoint. In addition, Dien Bien is operating Dien Bien - Hanoi route with a frequency of two flights/day.

The name Dien Bien, given by King Thieu Tri in 1841, means a solid border area, that proves the strategic position of the land.

Dien Bien is not only a historical destination that attracts domestic and foreign tourists thanks Dien Bien Phu Battlefield Special National Historical Relic - the place to be associated with the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory “resounded throughout the five continents and was world-shaking” but also a friendly destination for experiencing cultures of 19 ethnic groups with unique and diverse traditional cultural values. Besides, the magnificent system of caves, hot mineral water sources, and lakes spreading throughout the province create an attractive and natural beauty for Dien Bien.
